SF3D Space Combat is an attempt to create a space combat version of SF3D, trying to be as compatible with the original SF3D rules as possible. In actuality though, it is more of a blend of the Hard Vacuum Demo Rules and SF3D, and in addition ignores a lot of the basic SF3D rules because there is no need for things like artillery, terrain and so on.
Hard Vacuum is an alternate World War II space combat game by Fat Messiah Games and was chosen as the primary movement system because it combines a simple yet realistic vector movement system - necessary because the units of SF3D still obey the normal rules of physics, and the demo rules are free (and can be downloaded here) and come with most of the required counters. Even a basic map! As such, the basic SF3D movement rules are thrown away and the rules from Hard Vacuum used instead. Don't worry; you don't need to read all the demo rules! Once you have the demo rules, all you need to read and understand are the following sections:
In addition, Pages B and C will be required for a space map and the thruster counters. The rest of the demo rules can be safely ignored as they will play no part in these Space Rules. At the moment, proper counters are not available for the game, but I hope to generate some in the future. Standard SF3D counters should suffice, although you may want to place them on the hex counters from the Hard Vacuum demo game as the thruster counters work better when placed next to proper hex counters. The map itself should be printed out four times to create a playing area of roughly 20 hexes in length by 18 hexes in width. |
