The prototype AFS developed by Flare Furmer, a mechanical engineer,
attacked an
armed transport of Shutoral troops in mid-June, 2883. This was the
first win of the AFS. An innovative new tactical weapon, it overwhelmed
ordinary troops.
The elite Mercenary troops put the AFS into service immediately and it was the
primary weapon of those troops until the Super AFS prototype was completed in December
2883. The A.F.S was a core component of the Mercenary forces.
The AFS Mk II retained most of the appearance of the Mk I, but was a
much more refined suit, with a lot of improvements based on the
experience of the Mk I in combat. While the suit was given an increase
in armour (although barely), the placement of the armour was changed.
However, the main strengthening was in the chassis itself. In addition,
the laser was replaced with the more accurate Prg.42. With all these
improvements (including an upgrade in the targeting electronics too),
the suit as a whole was some 20 kilograms lighter than the Mk I.
The AFS Mk III was the last production model built, and in one
sense was a slight step backwards. It was made with a eye to simplified
construction and operation, and only 170 models were built. It was
built in 2884, but was quickly over shadowed by the SAFS. As such, the
Mk III was mainly issued to independent militia troops and used in rear
area patrols. Externally, the Mk III was identical in appearance to the
Mk II.
The AFS P Polar Bear was simply the 'artic' version of the AFS,
adding better insulation and heating for the pilot and equipment.
Many AFS models had two hands, removing the arm laser and allowing for
great flexibility, although at the loss of any inbuilt weapons - these
were designated the AFS Type E.
