The PKA M Melusine was developed in response to the Mercenaries SAFS suits, which were slowing gaining the upper hand due to their superior indirect sighting and weapon systems. The Melusine became the first Shutoral ground-based suit to employ indirect sights and was an instant hit with the pilots. Utilising many components from the Gustav unit, including the same power pack with a higher output, and encasing it in a Kauz body with new sensors, kept costs down and allowed for easier production. However the sighting and targeting systems were expensive and in short supply. Shutoral space forces felt that they should have the first choice; subsequently production was slow and unreliable, resulting in many units only getting a handful of this brilliant suit. Many Mel's were regulated to special units and high-ranking officers only.

In addition, many PKA M models had two hands, removing the arm laser and allowing for great flexibility, although at the loss of any inbuilt weapons.
