With the appearance of the Nutrocker, the AFS lost its reputation for
being invincible and so the Mercenary Development Bureau hurried
through a proposal for the substitute of the AFS which would use the
existing production facilities so that mass production of the new
design could be possible. The new suit was requested to have high
mobility and agility.
The body of the new suit had strengthed armour and while the head had
additional sensors, it still contained the open windows of the AFS.
When the battle suit selection test programme opened in September 2884,
weaknesses in the armour were revealed. Another test suit was also in
development at the same time - the AFS Archelon - and with its indirect
sighting system and new type of composite armour was clearly superior.
As a result of this, both development teams were invited to produce a
joint suit with features of both designs, and from this, the SAFS was
produced.
